I started recommending brown rice as a grain over quinoa when a friend from South America told me that all the Westerners are buying all the quinoa and what was once a staple food for South Americans, they can now not even afford to eat. As most quinoa comes from South America I thought 'we have to rethink this 'superfood' business and be more ethical about food promotion.' As a side note, there are a few places in Australia now that grow Quinoa such as http://www.kindredorganics.com.au/quinoa in Tasmania. And, of course, locally grown is best.
Nutritionally here are the comparisons:
Amount per 100g:
Brown rice - calories 111. Quinoa - calories 368
Brown rice - carbohydrate 23g. Quinoa -carohydrate 64g
Brown rice - protein 2.6g. Quinoa - protein 14g
Brown rice - fibre 15g. Quinoa - 15g
Here we go into battle with vitamins and minerals. And to simplify even more I'm just going to say who 'wins'
Folate and B12: quinoa
other B vitamins: brown rice
selenium: brown rice
PRICE PER 100G: BROWN RICE!!
Quinoa is a great source of protein, iron and zinc especially if you are vegan or vegetarian. But brown rice is so economical and so long as you have it with a protein source you'll get a similar nutritional value as quinoa - without the socioeconomic problems that quinoa grown commercially overseas brings with it.
